Alpha Omega Wrestling (AOW) delivered its debut event despite the cold and rainy weather on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Palm Springs Stadium in Palm Springs. Because of its successful premiere event, the wrestling company already has dates set for future events.

Though the company’s organizers were worried the weather conditions could have affected fan turn out, but that was not the case. The event sold more than 160 tickets, selling out the entire ringside seating section. AOW’s first show featured popular Southern California wrestlers. However, it was the local talent;  Chris Law, Darryl Adams and Damon Divine, all from the Coachella Valley, whom the fans in attendance wanted to see the most.

Darryl Adams, 22, a Palm Desert native, made his professional debut at Saturday’s event. “It was a real honor to be able to debut in my hometown and wrestle in front of my closest friends and family. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity,” he said.

Adams has wrestled as an amateur for seven years, and has trained professionally for two months.

The organization, run by some of its own wrestlers, has worked hard to promote the event across the Coachella Valley. The company ran commercials on local radio and television stations and also promoted the event online.

“There’s a market for wrestling anywhere, really. It just depends on how you promote it,” said Damon Hoffman, one of the company’s founders. He and the other AOW organizers are optimistic they will establish a strong fan base in the Valley.

Hoffman, who wrestles under the name “The Nomad” Damon Divine, also works for a top wrestling promotion, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.

“It all started while disturbing the peace one night,” says Hoffman, on how AOW got its start. Someone had called the sheriff to complain about Hoffman and a few others, who were training at a friends house. It was then that he and his friends decided to form their own wrestling promotion group.

Though the promotion is utilizing many professional wrestlers from Southern California, the company is based in Palm Springs, where Hoffman and the other organizers are located. “This is our home,” says Hoffman. “We have some big goals going forward.”

In addition to growing the promotion across the Valley, AOW organizers hope to expand into the rest of Southern California and to secure a local television contract. The promotion also hopes to sponsor local charities in the future, in order to give back to the community.

AOW’s next scheduled event is on Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Palm Desert YMCA.

Exactly two years ago, Lucha Lucy’s Wrestling Blog was created.

Today, luchalucyblog.wordpress.com becomes luchalucy.com.

I would love to sit here and tell you all of how much I’ve grown as a writer, though I’d like to think that I have grown somewhat. And I’d like to tell you how much the site has grown and gained such popularity; it has grown incredibly in the last year, the site more than doubled the visits in its first year.

Truthfully, Lucha Lucy’s Wrestling Blog is a work in progress still, and I, not Lucha Lucy, but rather, Lucinda, am constantly learning and trying to improve my skills as a writer, as an editor and as a web master.

A lot of this, I do for myself, in order to learn and grow within what I hope will one day be my profession.

But it would all mean so little if not for the +13,027 of you who have visited Lucha Lucy’s Wrestling Blog over the past two years. Or the those who have followed me on Twitter or “Liked” me on Facebook.

Without trying to sound overly dramatic, it’s because of all of you that I am proud of Lucha Lucy’s Wrestling Blog and of what I have been able to achieve because of the success it’s found.

I am proud to have been a contributing author of the second issue of Fair to Flair Quarterly, Summer 2011. I’m proud to share that honor with the other great wrestling bloggers who are apart of the quarterly. I’m proud that Lucha Lucy’s Wrestling Blog provided me (and my nephew Ethan) the opportunity to be in such great company.

I am truly thankful to the visitors and any one who has supported me and this website. You’ve not only provided me a reason to continue writing about what I love, but perhaps more importantly, have given me a reason to be proud of myself and of the things I have been able to accomplish with your support.

Eddie Guerrero is still one of my favorites. I do miss him often.

With lyrics like: “Got those elbows flyin’ like I’m Macho Man/If you’re not a fan, you don’t understand,” it’s easy to see where Madison Jay gets his lyrical inspiration.

Born Dionté Gambrell, Madison Jay, started his hip-hop career in 2002, while in high school, as part of a group called HeadHuntaz/H-Gang. In 2007, he began work on his solo endeavors.

In 2010, Madison Jay released the mix tape Raps Like Wrestling, based purely on his love of wrestling. The goal of creating this wrestling-based music was simply just a mission to merge the two genres – wrestling and hip-hop – and show the similarities between them both.

“I honestly was tired of rapping about the same topics and ideas every other rapper was talking about,” he says about first creating Raps Like Wrestling. ”I just decided to talk about something I could REALLY discuss and rap about better than most: WRESTLING!”

Before the debut of Raps Like Wrestling 2 (coming 2012) fans can look forward to Leak-A-Mania on Nov. 11. Featured on the prelude are tracks called “Best in the World,” “4 Horsemen,” “Red and Yellow,” and “Tito Santana.”

Madison Jay describes Raps Like Wrestling 2 as a “creative, innovative lyrical album.”

Madison Jay’s list of musical influences includes Nas, Wu-Tang Clan and Cormega. Also in that list is the WWE and WCW music directors.

Looking at tracks from both Raps Like Wrestling and Raps Like Wrestling 2, it’s quite evident that Madison Jay has been a long-time wrestling fan. Bret “Hitman” Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Chris Benoit, Rob Van Dam, and The Rock are some of his all-time favorite wrestlers.

“[...] the first thing you hear is [a wrestler's] music. The music and what it represents when a wrestler hits that stage is like when an artist is just hitting their stage the instant their music drops. The feeling between the two is almost euphoric!”

Madison Jay’s current favorite storyline is the  TNA Championship feud between James Storm and Bobby Roode.

As most other wrestling fans, Madison Jay has his gripes about some things going on in wrestling. He says, “As a fan I wouldn’t change anything because it would take out the value of what attracted me to wrestling in the first place, but as a “critic,” I would change a laundry list of things.”

“I use to dislike John Cena’s character once he reached “Hogan Status” but I’ve grown to appreciate him for what he is,” he says about John Cena. He adds, “CM Punk is one of the hottest things going right now in wrestling and he is everything I would wanna be as a rapper: outspoken, quick-witted, and the best in the world today!”
